Meet the official carriers of our sorry butts..."Jan" (short for Jan Ulrich) and "Heidi" (short for Heidi Klum). It's time everyone gets introduced because you'll be reading a lot about them.
Actually, Paul's not riding the Trek Volkswagen mountain bike...this was just a substitute image until "Heidi" received her full make-over. You know how blondes can be!
We're counting down the days - 21 days left to be exact!
Well where are the updates???? I know your there and I'm sure you have shot many photos and have interesting tales to tell of the plane flight there. Did the bikes survive?
i hope you had a good flight (were you in the air for new year's eve?) i'm looking forward to hearing about your adventures as you ease into the n.z. pace of life on the road...keep us posted!
I'll update the blog for my little brother by comment! They both have their bikes. Marijo's last bag was delivered yesterday (1/5). They arrived at our cousin's house 12/31, I think. He (our cousin, Lex) lives close to beaches and cafes in Aukland so they've been hanging out getting sunburned and learning to drive cars on the left side of the road! Paul is now done with an article he was writing and they are ready to go. Tomorrow they will go north to the top of NZ. Then back to Auckland and out to the Coromandel Penninsula, Rotorua, Lake Taupa and then to the South Island. Wish I was there!!! -Julie
Here's the latest from Jan and Heidi: "We spent the night in Orwea and then headed north yesterday. We got blasted by rain but still managed to make about 50mi. Spent the night in a crappy backpackers (hostel). Headed out again this am and we are in Waipu. We will be continuing on but may hop on a bus for a bit b/c this section of highway is very busy and it is only a two lane road. We are headed for Cape Rienga where the Pacific and Tasman Sea meet. Then back down the West side through the Kauri forest and back to Auckland."
Hey Marijo! This is Katelyn from Purple. Hope all is well and your butts are too not sore! Keep us posted and make sure you go to Abel Tasman National Park. I'm sure you're having a blast!
Found this in my inbox this evening after my freezing wet soccer game. From Paul: "The weather got a bit better yesterday. Only minor bits of rain. Today we went out on a tall ship, the Tucker Thompson. We sailed out of Russel for a trip out into the Bay of Islands. It was really fun. Swimming, sailing, nice lunch and a hike on one of the islands. Tommorrow we head back to Auckland. We are going by bus to avoid the heavy traffic on the narrow road. We will probably stay there for the weekend and head south on Monday.
We were doing surprisingly well after 50miles. My butt is a little sore but it only means that it will feel better soon.
