We took far less pictures on day two due to weather. The difference in terrain from yesterday is quite astonishing. The whole area from Lake Sedgemere to Hanmer Springs was more like a gravel pit - or "screes" as they call them. Not only did the terrain change but so did the weather. Paul happened to catch the best pictures of the day as we climbed/pushed our bikes over Island Saddle (1347m alpine pass). The descent tired the upper body. Shoulders were back to square one. We went from sunny, blue skies before Island Saddle to severe headwinds, rain and headache-like road corrugation after Island Saddle. I was toast...but Paul was bound and determined to finish this thing. I finally gave in with 15 miles left. I guess I looked pitiful enough for Jonathan and Lindsey Hub who gave me, my bike, and Paul's gear a ride into Hanmer Springs. Paul decided to finish the ride, gearless, over Jack's Pass into Hanmer Springs. By the time Jonathan, Lindsey, little Willow, little Rowan and I made it into Hanmer Springs, Paul showed up to see the last bag come off the top of the van from the rack. I almost fell to the ground in disbelief. That bugger!! Paul was all smiles...
The rest of the day was spent soaking in the thermal pools in Hanmer Springs Village Center. Definitely a must do if in New Zealand...although we heard the Japanese thermals near Lewis Pass was much better. We didn't make it there.
Thanks so much to Jonathan and Lindsey Hub! We enjoyed meeting you guys and having dinner. We hope to see you again down the road! Cheers to you guys on your new adventure in New Zealand!
