Mt Cook to Alexandra via Omarama and Cromwell

The next morning we were greeted by the heards of Japanese tourist heading off on their guided hikes to the glacier. They must have found us quite a curiosity as they snapped picture after picture of MJ and I in our biking clothes and bikes all loaded up with gear. After a great day at Mt Cook we decided not to push our luck with the weather so we headed off towards Omarama, home of the merino wool for Icebreaker brand active clothing line. It was a pretty uneventful ride with only the wind over the last 18mi worth mention. We met a great group of riders at the camp and had a nice evening talking with them far past our bed time.

Next day we had two large climbs on our way to Cromwell for our longest mileage day so far (110km or 68mi). We surpassed 1000mi on the odometer on this day. Again wind hit us spoiling what would have been great descents. The last 18mi were winds of even greater magnitude than the day before. We were absolutely knackered on our arrival in Cromwell and could barely make our way to town for French fries and cheesecake. We were leaning on each other for support.

We knew that the next day's ride would be short so we slept for 11 hours and didn't leave camp until 12:30pm. On our way out we checked out what is left of historic Cromwell after they built a dam and flooded most of it. We had a fairly easy ride along Lake Dunstan to the quaint goldmining town of Clyde where the Otago Rail-to-Trail starts. This trail is NZ's first rail-to-trail and is 150km from Clyde to Middlemarch where we will catch the historic train to Dunedin. We continued on just a bit to Alexandra where we are writing this post from.

We'll post pictures at a later date. Our computer timed out last night and we were out of gold coins to supply it more energy.

Cheers!
